 'Mothers and Mothers'

By Shep. Pizzuco

I cannot say enough about 'Mothers' in the church. They are the solid foundation on which it stands. Without them there would be little done except perhaps discussion on what to do.

Mothers are the reason the church is clean. 'Mothers' are the main fund-raisers, they care for children throughout the birthing process of baptism and Mothers are there in death through Mourning. Without 'Mothers there would be no one to replace the candle in a candidates hands that is getting too short and about to burn the skin. Without Mothers there would be no one to wipe our face.

Without Mothers no one would wipe away our tears as we confess every sin.  Without Mothers most woman would fall back down after praying as their skirts and aprons get caught on their feet.  Who would wipe down the benches? Men would do it once then talk about how best to do it next time for weeks on end.

Who would replace the flowers? Men would dismiss flowers as something that is a frill anyway.

Who would feed the pilgrims on the mourning ground? We all know that men would forget at least a meal a day.

Who would prepare the food? Men would...well let’s not even go there.

The importance of mothers in the church cannot be spoken of enough. Not having mothers is like missing our legs in a race of speed. You get nowhere very fast.

My greatest experiences have driven me to write this. There have been so many that touched me over the years with their kindness, their sincere love and of course their food!

When my own mother turned on me another came up, then another, and then another until I had a whole flock around me nurturing and healing me as I got back on my road again.

I have to mention Mother Ena, Mother Yvonne and Mother Judy to name a few.

Alas, my story is not all candy and rainbows. My own mother who brought me into the church should have been part of the this story but as many others put her own ambition and drive to be the first among the women ahead of her love for Christ the King.

Some have made it their business to show up with the most striking of dress and wearing such things that befit queens but lack even the simplest of love towards a child, no matter how young.

Every church has at least one. A mother who hates many but loves none. Who will fall over themselves for the pastor but will not lift a finger for a another. They speak of things that they have seen, claim to speak to God Himself but don’t know Him.

Psalms 37 tells us: Fret not thyself because of evildoers,

neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,

and wither as the green herb.

                                    Truly they always do.

The Mothers of the church who are the reason the church is still growing, who are the reason that we can assemble in a clean and respectful environment, I salute you.

Let us love and appreciate the Mothers who have wiped away our tears, who have bathed us without scorning us, who have fed us, given us water, cleaned our vomit and willingly held up the basin for us, let us love them who from the goodness of their own hearts have filled our own.

Mothers truly do not get enough credit for what they do. It is always the men who rise above them and call the shots. A man must lead, but even Jesus when his mother called him to make wine he could not refuse. He expressed his frustration on the matter but the face of the matter is that he still did it!

To the most under-appreciated of you, I thank you and praise God for you all.  Without you there would be no church, and there would be no faith.

"When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, 'Woman, behold, your son!'. Then he said to the disciple, 'Behold, your mother!’"

(Jn 19:26-27).
