Scoliosis is a medical
condition (not a disease), which affects the spine of children as well as
adults. It is sometimes referred to as curvature of the spine. According to
medical reports approximately 1.5 per cent of kids 14 years and over who
develop curvatures which measure more than 10 degrees. The reports also
stated that and severe curves greater than 30 degrees occur in just about
0.2 per cent of the general population in the United States.
It is believed that there
is a greater risk among adolescent females to develop scoliosis than their
male counterparts. It is believed that girls are five times more likely to
develop curves which need treatment than young males in a similar age group.
Given the seriousness of
this complaint among youths, the United States Department of Health has
implemented school screening programs to help detect this debilitating
condition. The purpose of this early detection program is to avoid
surgeries.
In Trinidad and Tobago,
there is no such program in public schools despite the fact that there are
numerous students who are believed to be affected by this condition.
