
Henry Louis Gates,
Jr.

Pride
and joy of black America, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is scheduled
speak at the Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day function on Friday 30th March,
2007. The event will be held at the Eric Williams Auditorium of the La Joya
Complex on Eastern Main Road, St Joseph, Trinidad at 4 p.m. Professor Gates,
who is well known in the United States and highly respected among
intellectual circles concerning multicultural and African American issues,
is also known as an eloquent commentator and formidable intellectual force.
He can be seen regularly on programs such as, 'Like Its Is', and
'Black Forum'. Many of us may remember him in the documentary 'Finding
Oprah's Roots.'
Professor
Gates is well recognized in participating in issues concerning Black
America. He is no 'Johnny Come Lately' nor an empty cymbal. He has
successfully and respectfully held appointments at prestigious institutions
such as Duke University, Cornell University and Yale University. Presently,
he is Chair of the Afro-American Studies Department and Director of the
W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Studies at Harvard University.
He has
penned numerous articles and books such as: Figures in Black:
Works, Signs, and the "Racial" Self (1987),The Signifying Monkey:A
Theory of Afro-American Literary Criticism (1988), Writing, 'Race,' and
the Difference It Makes" Colored People: A Memoir (1994),
The Future of the Race (1996), and Thirteen Ways of Looking at a
Black Man (1997) among others. He also wrote and produced the
documentaries “Wonders of the African World” (2002) and “America Beyond the
Color Line” (2004) for the BBC and Public Broadcasting System, and authored
the companion volumes to both series. (This is just touching the tip of
the iceberg concerning books he has penned and documentaries he has
produced.)
Those who have a
special interest in Black history or Afro-American history are expected to
come away with a vast treasure of knowledge.
