Those of us who are
“true” Spiritual Baptists must adopt a policy of containment if the Faith is
to remain authentically a Christian religion. As Spiritual Baptists we
sometimes behave as spiritual sponges; absorbing and assimilating to every
religious practice we find attractive and /or intriguing. We must remember
who and what we are – FUNDAMENTAL CHRISTIANITY WITH AN AFRICAN FLAVOR.
We must be careful not to
reach back too far into the heart of our ancestral heritage, by adopting
practices that are contrary to our calling as Christ’s followers. We shout,
preach, and dance to the rhythm of the drums. We repent on Mercy-seat and
baptize in living waters. We develop spiritually and learn how to become
victorious Christians through the rites of mourning. We must be careful not
to entertain any spirit and power other than the HOLY SPIRIT. We must not
lend our bodies to be possessed by any power other than the Holy Ghost
Power.
It is impossible to be a
disciple of Christ and embrace Hinduism, Budhism, Kabbalah, and Orisa. You
are not a brother or sister if you “seek out” other Fathers. We must contain
our rich religion; keep it clean and pure, free from contrary religious
practices while maintaining the overt emotionalism and energy of our
Africaness.
